History of Queens New York City

Talking about the history of Queens New York City, it was recognized in the year 1683 as one of the original twelve counties of New York. It was named as Queens for the Queen consort, Catherine of Braganza , the Portuguese princess who married King Charles II of England in 1662.

Going little further with the history of Queens borough, it was officially certified as a New York City Borough on May 4, 1897, by a vote of the New York State Legislature after an 1894 referendum on consolidation. After this, the 280 square miles of the eastern part in queens that became Nassau County was partitioned on January 1, 1899.

Then on the date Jan 1, 1898 in the history of Queens NY, one of the five boroughs, the borough of queens was established. It was formed by merging various parts of the city together such as the Long Island City, Flushing, the towns of Newtown, Jamaica, and the Rockaway Peninsula portion of the Town of Hempstead. When the new borough of Queens, New York was established, all the municipal governments which were Long Island City, the county government, all towns, and all villages were dissolved.

The Queens borough history before the formation of new borough of queens, new York, showed that the areas of Queens County other than the ones which were included in the consolidation plan, were North Hempstead and Oyster Bay, and the majority of the leftover part of the Town of Hempstead, continued to be a part of Queens County till the time they were until they were withdrawn to create the new Nassau County on January 1, 1899. After this, the boundaries of Queens County and the Borough of Queens became coterminous. When the states were joined to create new borough, the Jamaica again happened to be the county seat, though this time the county offices was broaden to nearby Kew Gardens also.

The history of Queens New York City from 1905 to 1908, witnessed various important steps which were taken to develop this borough. The major development work that was done during this time in the history of Queens NY was the electrification of Long Island Rail Road in Queens. The opening of transportation to and from Manhattan when the Queensboro Bridge was finished in 1909 and with railway tunnels under the East River in 1910.

Then after some years, again the history of Queens NY saw Queens as the venue for the 1939 New York World's Fair and the 1964 New York World's Fair. Another5 milestone in History of Queens borough was laid don with the opening of the LaGuardia Airport, in northern Queens in 1939 and Idlewild Airport, in southern Queens which is now called as JFK Airport, opened in 1948
